Experience

Attorney Smyth has experienced a wide ranging legal career.  He previously served as General Counsel to the Boston Retirement System, the largest municipal retirement system in Massachusetts.  As General Counsel, Attorney Smyth oversaw all legal matters pertaining to the Boston Retirement System.  In this capacity, he has been involved in hundreds of disability cases and many other public pension issues involving the System's members and their beneficiaries.


Prior to joining the Boston Retirement Board, Mr. Smyth worked as a trial attorney at the law firm of Burns & Farrey where he primarily defended clients in civil actions.


Before that, he was an Assistant District Attorney for Worcester County where he was assigned to the Appeals Division and prosecuted cases in the Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court.
